The Relationship Between Clare and Irene in Nella Larsen’s Passing
Nella Larsen’s book, “Passing”, describes prejudices as well as social expectations in context of ethnicity, gender and identity. Two characters, Clare Kendry and Irene Redfield develop those factors that make up identity. In one way, the novel can be viewed as to be fighting for the equal treatment of black people as shown through Irene’s life, while on the other, through Clare, it shows how black people have been carried away by the desire to fit in the society that they have lost their own identity and are compelled to live a double standard life. Based on this, this paper will be a description of double standard life struggles by exploring the relationship between Irene and Clare; two light skinned ladies who are able to seamlessly live like white women.
